Sitemap guidelines and best practices.

A sitemap is a file that provides search engines with a structured list of all the important pages on your website that you want to be indexed. It helps search engines like Google and Bing understand your website’s structure and efficiently crawl your content.

How to create an effective sitemap.

  • Ensure all URLs return a 200 OK status code – Only include URLs that return a valid 200 OK status. Exclude broken, redirected, or invalid links from your sitemap. Ensure you consistently use the correct trailing slash variation (/ or no / at the end of your URLs) across your URLs to avoid unnecessary redirects.
  • Include only canonical URLs – Avoid adding canonicalised URLs, duplicates, or parameter-based variations. Only include the primary version of each page to avoid conflicting instructions.
  • Keep it updated – Your sitemap should always reflect your website’s current structure. We recommend using a dynamically generated on-site XML sitemap that automatically updates as you publish or remove pages. Use this tool as a starting point to create an initial sitemap for your site.
  • Limit the file size – A single sitemap file should be less than 50MB and contain fewer than 50,000 URLs. If your site exceeds this limit, split it into multiple sitemaps and use a sitemap index to reference them.
  • Submit your sitemap – Upload your sitemap to your website’s root directory (e.g., example.com/sitemap.xml) and submit the URL in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools to help search engines crawl your site efficiently.
